I’m constantly exploring ways to work smarter, not just in how we produce animation, but also in how we conduct research that informs our creative strategies.

From developing storylines or understanding the needs of our clients, solid research is needed.

To make it easier, I use a few AI tools to help me do some research. These are a few recommended platforms that you might be interested in trying too.

Elicit

I use Elicit when I need to dive into research papers because it has a massive database of over 1million papers.

Elicit offers both free and paid versions, and I am currently considering getting the paid one, which costs $10/month. I think it's worth it for the extra features.

What I find incredibly helpful is how easily I can summarise research findings. My favourite features include:

  • Pulling data directly from tables in research papers
  • Exporting results to RIS, CSV, or Bib formats
  • Instantly viewing the DOI for citation
  • Generating lists of related themes and concepts based on my topic
  • Quickly accessing the abstract summary
  • Adding columns like Main Findings, Intervention, Outcome Measured, and Intervention Effect to organise my research more clearly

Scite.ai

Whenever I need to verify if a claim is supported or contradicted by existing research, I turn to Scite.ai.

Scite.ai starts at $12/month, and it’s been super useful for organising my literature reviews and sourcing credible evidence.

It shows whether research supports or disputes a particular claim, which saves me a lot of time.

Some of the features I like include:

  • Creating a custom dashboard with articles that match my interests
  • Checking if references are cited properly
  • Browsing pre-built dashboards and discovering top authors in my field
  • Comparing yearly index rankings across different subject areas
  • Setting my search strategy and filtering results with specific keywords
  • Citing research in formats like APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, Vancouver, IEEE, and BibTex

Consensus

I also use Consensus, an academic search engine that gives me access to a vast library of research papers. It’s especially helpful for deeper research because it provides:

  • A clear snapshot of each paper (including population, sample size, methods, and outcomes)
  • Easy-to-use citation tools for APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, and BibTex
  • The ability to copy, save, and share papers seamlessly
  • Filters that let me sort papers by year
  • Definitions for complex research terms, which help me understand studies faster
  • The option to choose between different research domains, like art, biology, business, and chemistry
