4 Best FREE AI Image Generator
AI-powered image creation at zero cost
AI image generators are everywhere now, some are mind-blowingly good, some are just plain cursed.
I’ve tried a bunch, especially the free ones, because I’m always looking for visuals for my website, searching for an idea, or occasional experiments.
These are some of the tools I’ve found most useful:
Craiyon
I used to write this one off. Back when it was called DALL·E Mini, it gave me images that looked like they’d been pulled from a fever dream.
But I came back to it recently, and it’s weirdly grown on me.
Pros:
Unlimited generations, for free. No login, no credit limits, no “you’ve used up your quota” messages. You can generate whatever you want, as much as you want, which is rare now.
You can also now use negative prompts. You can tell it what you don’t want in the image (“no text,” “no creepy hands”), and the results improve. There’s also an upscale feature if you want to clean things up.
Cons:
The images are still kind of cursed. I asked for a cat in a hat and got something that looked like it had survived five disasters.
It’s slow on the free plan. Each image takes about a minute. Not terrible, but it adds up fast when you’re iterating.
DeepAI
I found DeepAI when I was too lazy to make another account.
It lets you generate images without logging in, which honestly feels kind of refreshing.
Pros:
No account needed. You just land on the site, type your prompt, and go. No sign-ups, no emails, just instant access.
Some basic prompt customization is available. You can tweak things like image type and color, more than most “instant” tools.
Cons:
The art quality is straight out of early AI days. Faces are warped, details are blurry, and most of the results feel like rough drafts. Even the site admits this.
The free version is very limited. You can upgrade to HD or better models for $5 (about 2 cents per image), but the free version isn’t great.
Midjourney
This one isn’t free, but I’m including it because it’s still the gold standard for AI-generated art, especially if you’re into fantasy or surreal visuals.
Pros:
Stunning results. Midjourney feels like an art buddy who only thinks in dreamy visuals. You can type something abstract and get something ready for printing.
Fast, and gives four options per prompt. Each set usually arrives in under a minute, which is great for brainstorming.
Cons:
It only runs on Discord. If you’re unfamiliar with it, there’s a learning curve. Even if you are, the process feels clunky.
No free trial anymore. The cheapest plan is $10/month, which isn’t bad if you’re serious, but not ideal for dabbling.
Leonardo.ai
This one genuinely surprised me. I’d heard it was good, but didn’t expect this level of polish from a free tool.
Pros:
Excellent image quality. It nails realistic prompts with sharp, clean visuals.
Also this one is a generous free tier. You get enough daily credits to actually use it regularly.
Lots of control. You can pick models, tweak settings, and run variations — great if you like to tinker.
Cons:
The interface can feel overwhelming. There’s a lot going on, especially for beginners.
Best features are behind a paywall. Still, the free version holds up better than most.
Some of these tools are great for quick experiments, while others feel more polished and professional.
