5 min readMar 9, 2021

Our daily routine in a nutshell? Eat, sleep, YouTube, and repeat. Let’s admit it.

We use YouTube to find videos, any videos, from how to make a perfect omelet to curb your memes compilations.

It’s easy just to spend hours and hours just watching online videos on this platform.

Yeah. It’s now safe to say that YouTube has now become a part of our daily lives. Well, at least most of us.

With more than 2 billion logged-in monthly users, This most popular video-sharing platform is now the second-largest search engine worldwide — just right behind google.

Now that almost everyone is watching YouTube, many people make a dedicated career of it. There are at least 50 million active content creators on the platform. Whoa!

And those who have a grey check-mark on their channel are considered to be “established.”

Do you want to get the verification badge on your channel?

Just keep scrolling…

YouTube Verified Channels: You Need to Know

First of all, you need to remember that verifying your YouTube channel to get access to more features and getting a verification mark or badge are two different things.

Every new user can (and maybe should) verify their accounts so that they can enjoy more YouTube features.

All you have to do is just submit your phone number and ask you to enter the code they’ve sent to you. It ensures YouTube that you’re not a robot.

When you verify your YouTube account, you can upload 15 minutes long videos.

Meanwhile…

Getting a YouTube verification badge is totally different.

It might take time and effort to get a verification badge because it has some requirements, and you have to be eligible for that.

Here’s a channel with a verification badge look like:

Or like this, if it’s a music channel:

Very familiar, isn’t it?

If a channel is verified, it’s the official channel of a creator, company, public figure, etc. It helps users to distinguish official channels from other channels that have the same or similar names on the platform.

Verified channels don’t have additional access to more features whatsoever. It’s simply to let other users know which channels are official and ‘real.’ By all means, it’s a mark of authenticity.

Verification badges can help you prevent any stolen traffic that should go to your channel. Also, if you have it, you can also become a neon sign in the comment section.

Verification Badge Requirements

YouTube requirements for verification just keep changing. On September 19, 2019, YouTube introduced a new set of requirements:

1) You need to have at least 100,000 subscribers

Your channel has to have more than 100,0000 subscribers to get a verification badge on your channel.

That seems like a massive amount of subscribers, so it’s not widely available to everyone.

This is to show that you’re a dedicated user and serious about being a creator on the platform.

Even though verification badge isn’t some kind of “award,” some creators may feel that getting them somewhat “rewarding.”

Once you have that amount of subscribers, you can apply for the verification.

In some cases, YouTube also considered giving a verification badge to users under 100,000 subscribers if they’re quite well-known outside of the platform.

2) Your channel needs to be authentic

It means that you create the channel to represent the real creator, brand, public figure, or entity it claims to be.

YouTube would never accept a request for a verification badge for fake (deliberately impersonating someone else) or unofficial accounts.

Therefore, sometimes YouTube asks for documentation or other data to ensure that you’re the real ‘creator’ and rightful owner of the channel.

3) Your channel needs to be complete

Your channel must be public and complete all the elements that YouTube provides to fill, like description, thumbnails, channel icon, and valuable content.

Also, you need to be active on the platform, upload videos regularly, interact with subscribers through community posts, comment sections, and more.

See how to make your channel complete here: YouTube Channel Essentials.

Other ‘Rules’ You Need to Know

Once you get your verification badge, it’ll stay here on your channel. Unless you violate YouTube Community Guidelines or the YouTube Terms of Service, YouTube can remove your verification badge.

You also need to reapply for a verification badge if you change your YouTube name. So, make sure you take care of your name before submitting an appeal.

Choose ones that you’re going to use for a long time, so you don’t have to spend extra effort to reapply.

How to Get the Grey Checkmark on Your Channel

Once you make sure that your channel meets all the requirements mentioned above, you can apply for the verification badge. Here’s the step-by-step guide:

  • Fill out this form (only those creators that have 100k subscribers can access and fill out the form).
  • Submit it and just wait few days for YouTube to review the form.
  • If you want to check your channel status, click on Channel Settings, then head to Status and Features, and you should be able to see your account status. If your account is verified, you will see a bolded “Verified” next to your brand’s name.
  • And if you find someone impersonating you or your channel, you can report them.

There you have it. That’s been a quick guide to get a verification badge on YouTube.

Those verification badges or checkmarks can indeed have value; it adds an extra level of authority and authenticity to your on-platform presence, highlights your comments, and prevents other users from impersonating you or your channel.

But, of course, it’s not essential. So, even if you’re just getting started with your YouTube channel and haven’t met the requirements yet, don’t be discouraged.

So, what do you think about the YouTube verification checkmark? Are you planning to grow your YouTube channel and try to get one one day? Let us know your thoughts on the comment sections below!
