How Interactive Videos Transform Education

Interactive videos are a great way to make education more immersive, effective, and more fun.

Throughout history, classes (the best ones) were at least partially interactive, while learning materials were one-directional.

The book, an instructional video, or anything else is not taking your feedback.

This means that you often have no way of testing your knowledge, at least not before the exam (by which point it’s probably too late).

Grabbing attention

One of the worst side-effects of traditional learning material was that it was so easy to lose attention since they didn’t require feedback.

Even the person reading, after a while, loses track of whether they’re actually reading or just looking at the page.

With interactive video, you have to stay engaged.

Sooner or later, you’ll have to click on something or make a response, and if you’re not paying attention, you’ll have no clue what to do.

In other words, an interactive video gives you an immediate incentive to pay attention.

What do we mean by “immediate” incentive?

Well, you did have an incentive, even with traditional materials. You wanted to score well on the exam.

However, with an interactive video, your “reward” is in a few minutes instead of a few months.

They’re also far more visually engaging.

Personalized learning

The biggest problem with traditional education was that it completely ignored individual differences between learners.

We know that there are four learning styles:

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Read/Write
  • Kinaesthetic

Therefore, it makes no sense that any learning material would be perfect for every learner.

This can be incorporated into the curriculum through a larger academic strategic plan or applied on a smaller scale (between a learner and teacher or a learner and the platform they use).

Either way, it’s not just about the decision to incorporate interactive videos into the curriculum; it’s about finding the right angle to do it.

Instant feedback

One of the worst phenomena in learning is a scenario where you’re unaware you’ve learned something wrong.

Imagine a young boxer repeating a punch incorrectly for thousands and tens of thousands of times without anyone pointing it out to them.

By this point, it will become muscle memory, and it will be near-impossible to unlearn.

With traditional learning materials, you must wait for a special occasion to hear that you’ve learned something wrong.

This way, the feedback is much quicker, and you get a much easier job of correcting a quick course.

Better for simulations

Simulations are, arguably, one of the best learning methods out there. Interactive videos are a format that is incredibly simulation-friendly.

It can immerse you in the situation and give you a way to offer your responses.

You get to see the rest of the scenario play out and see exactly how well you would do under these circumstances.

This gives you a safe way to check how much you’ve learned and how well you would do under those circumstances.

This type of learning helps the lessons get etched into your mind, and there are no costs or consequences for mistakes.

Accessibilities

Videos, in general, are very inclusive.

The right captions can be amazing for those who are hard of hearing.

When their audio is done right, they can provide all the info to people who struggle to see.

Moreover, this type of interactive content (providing instant feedback) may even be great for people who struggle with ADHD.

This type of learning material is available to a much larger audience.

It’s a way to make education more egalitarian.
